Creating Positive Citizen Narratives

At a time when divisive rhetoric and negative stereotypes dominate public discourse, fostering a shared, positive vision for Europe and Bulgaria’s place in it is more important than ever. #PositiveCitizensNarrativesForEurope was an initiative that addressed this challenge by empowering citizens and organisations to craft narratives that inspire unity, engagement, and action.

The Need
Negative narratives—often fuelled by misinformation, fear, and polarisation—undermine trust in civil society organisations and discourage civic participation. These negative stories paint a fragmented picture of our societies, creating barriers to collaboration and shared progress. In contrast, positive narratives can strengthen bonds, promote inclusion, and encourage citizens to actively shape their communities.

Our Approach

To develop compelling positive narratives, ProInfo adopted a structured methodology:
1. Analysis of Negative Narratives: We conducted in-depth research to identify the key themes and emotional triggers of divisive narratives, enabling us to counter them effectively.
2. Formulating Positive Narratives: Through workshops and consultations, we crafted messages rooted in shared values such as solidarity, diversity, and common purpose, ensuring they resonate emotionally with audiences.
3. Targeting Personas: By identifying specific audience segments of the “moveable middle” we tailored narratives to meet their unique needs, concerns, and aspirations.
4. Harnessing Emotions: Understanding that emotions drive engagement, we crafted a methodology of using storytelling techniques to evoke hope, pride, and a sense of belonging, moving beyond dry facts to create lasting impact.

Empowering Change-makers

ProInfo supported key Bulgarian civil society organisations by providing:
1. Practical Guides: Easy-to-follow resources on narrative development, digital marketing, and strategic communication to empower grassroots initiatives.
2. A Mentoring Program: Tailored guidance for select organisations to refine their narratives and amplify their messages.
3. Brainstorming workshops and consultation: Interactive sessions that equip participants with the tools and confidence to communicate their vision effectively.

Results and Vision

ProInfo’s initiative has inspired some key organisations in the Bulgarian civil society sector to adopt and improve their methodologies to help positive narrative change, leading to increased civic participation and more cohesive messaging. By creating a ripple effect, we’re helping to build a stronger, more united civil society that aligns with European values – one story at a time. Together, we’re proving that the power of positive storytelling can change perceptions, foster collaboration, and shape a brighter future for all Europeans.
